Best Romantic Comedies - Not My List!

What are the top 10 romantic comedies of all time? That's something most romantics would surely love to know so here is list which has been prepared by combining the box office earnings of these films from both domestic and international sources. How many have you seen?

Romantic comedy movies are a sub-group of romantic movies and are notable for being light-hearted and having plots that are often humorous. The path of true love may be thwarted, temporarily, by errors, accidents and coincidences, or by differences in social standing. 'Notting Hill' and 'Pretty Woman' are examples of romantic comedies.

The romantic comedies are contrasted with romantic drama, a further sub-group of romance films in which the main premise of the movie is concerned with the romantic attraction between the leading characters but not in a funny or humorous way. The attraction often causes them to struggle with significant questions about their lives, such as "should I remain with my current partner?" and "what am I doing with my life?" Dramatic impact is created by the emotional expression of those involved. 'Titanic' and 'The Notebook' are examples of romantic drama.

The listing below differs slightly from those top domestic earners as some which did well at home performed poorly at theaters in other countries. Others boosted their earnings considerably in the overseas market and greatly improved their ranking.

For instance, Pretty Woman, whilst 4th in domestic earnings, at $178 million, also pulled in a whopping $285 million in the foreign market to grab the top spot overall.

Overseas sales were also extremely important for Notting Hill (with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts) as it earned 'only' $116 on the U.S. domestic market but more than double that ($248 million) internationally to leap up to 7th place.

The Top 10 Romantic Comedies - based on gross earnings (U.S. domestic + international):

1. Pretty Woman (1990) - $463 million
2. Sex And The City (2008) - $415 m
3. What Women Want ((2000) - $374 m
4 There's Something About Mary ((1998) - $370 m
5. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) - $369 m
6. Hitch (2005) - $368 m
7. Notting Hill (1999) - $364 m
8. The Proposal (2009) - $315 m
9. Runaway Bride (1999) - $309 m
10. My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) - $299 m

The queen of romantic comedies is clearly Julia Roberts. She starred in four of the top 10 movies listed above - Pretty Woman (1990), Notting Hill (1999), Runaway Bride (1999) and My Best Friend's Wedding (1997). The 90s were clearly good for her. Cameron Diaz managed to star in two - There's Something About Mary (1998) and My Best Friend's Wedding (1997).

A high production budget is not always a guarantee of success, nor is it a good indicator as Pretty Woman had a budget of only $14 million - Julia Roberts was relatively unknown at the time and her fee for that movie was only $300,000, being mainly known for her role in Steel Magnolias (1989). She was not the first choice for the lead in Pretty Woman, gaining the role only after a number of other, better known, actresses had turned it down as 'too sexist' or 'degrading to women'.

Another movie which far surpassed expectations was My Big, Fat Greek Wedding (2002). It had a budget of only $5 million and earned $241 million at the U.S. box office alone (far surpassing Pretty Woman on $178 million), more than any other romantic comedy. It also earned a respectable $127 million in overseas sales. While not as successful internationally as Pretty Woman (which managed $285 million), it allowed MBFGW to secure the number 5 spot for a modest outlay.

Romantic comedies are hugely popular with the cinema going public, as well as home viewers. A list of the top-rated and successful romantic movies can be a very useful guide in viewer selection.

Making Space for Your Relationship

How does your home represent your relationship? Is it helping or hurting your relationship with your partner and how can you improve it?

Since your home is energetically an outer reflection of what is going on internally, it can give many clues as to the real state of your personal relationships and also many opportunities for growth and improvement.

Let's start with the room that energetically represents and reflects your relationship the most - your bedroom. how do you feel about this room? Do you like the furniture that you have? Do you love your bed - is it comfortable? What pictures and accessories do you have and how do they reflect your relationship?

Your bedroom is the most important room in your home because it is the room that is closest to you and has the biggest impact on you. It is important that both you and your partner love your room. It needs to be your personal sanctuary - calm, peaceful, romantic. Here are some specifics to pay attention to:

The bed
This is the most important piece of furniture in the room. It should be comfortable, sturdy and solid. If you have a headboard, choose one that is solid - that will symbolize you having solid support in your life. The bed should be in the command position - meaning that it's as far away from the door as possible, with the headboard up against a wall or corner and that you can see the entrance to the room from the bed.

Remove anything that is stored underneath the bed - items under the bed can create stagnant energy that affects you as you sleep. If you have a king-sized bed, put a red sheet over the box spring to 'heal' the split down the middle.

Clutter
Remove all clutter from the room. It stops energy flow and will create problems in your relationship. It will affect both partners, because it will drain your energy until you both find yourself feeling more and more tired and lethargic, lacking motivation. This is when arguments can occur.

Artwork/accessories
Choose artwork and accessories that are calming and peaceful. Things that represent your relationship, such as a wedding photo or something that you brought back from your honeymoon or a vacation, or just a nice, recent photo of the two of you together.

Remove anything that is not conducive to a happy, harmonious relationship - you can put pictures of the rest of your family, children and pets anywhere else in the house, but save the bedroom for pictures of you and your partner and artwork that reflects romance or is particularly meaningful to both of you.

Colors
Choose warm colors, as opposed to cool colors. Any colors that have warmth to them - so, for example, instead of white, choose cream, or go with colors that have a hint of red in them (this does not mean that you should paint your bedroom bright red!) Warm colors help to create warmth in your relationship and foster close communication.

Things that intrude
Keep things like televisions, children's toys books, desks, computers, exercise equipment, etc., out of this room if you possibly can. These all intrude on your relationship and come between you. They are also 'active' with energy and you want this room to be soothing and calm to promote restful sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, look at how much energy is in the room and see how you can calm it down. For example, mirrors are very active with energy. If you have a lot of mirrors in the room (such as mirrored closet doors) you may find you have trouble sleeping. If so, try covering up the mirrors before bed for a few nights to see if your sleep improves.

There are many other ways in which your home reflects and impacts your relationship - this is just one room. But it is the most important room. Making changes here can bring about powerful and positive change in your relationship very quickly.

My husband and I are in the third chapter in our lives. With our daughter off to college, out-of-state, and our out-of-control wild and crazy days a fun memory about which we still like to reminisce, we often find ourselves climbing into our comfortable clothes on Friday and Saturday nights and sitting in our predesignated spots on the couch. The conversation sounds something like this, "What do you want to watch tonight? I don't think The Big Bang Theory is on." and, his typical reply, "Well what do we have on Tivo? I think most of these are reruns".

Sitting around staring at each other on Friday and Saturday nights has become pretty commonplace for my husband and I in the last few years. With our crazy schedules and lack of energy after dealing with problems all week, we both agree (most of the time) that the last thing we want to do is get all dressed up and go out. Now, just because we are in our third chapter does not mean we don't enjoy each others company and like to have fun. Quality time is still very important to us, so we try to find ways not to fall into the what's-on-TV-tonight humdrum existence. If we sound a lot like you and you are planning on staying in this weekend and need a quick and easy, unplanned date-night or are a newly dating couple and looking for a creative idea, you might consider making a Mystery Meal.

A Mystery Meal is pretty easy to prepare for and you will have absolutely no idea how it will turn out! The game is set when both people individually pick up five items to be used in preparing what's for a dinner. No cheating and telling each other what you are buying. You can go together to the grocery store, but use separate check out lanes and no peeking into each other's baskets! Then, the object is to get together and prepare a meal out of the ingredients you buy and ONLY what you buy. Sure, you can use your spices and condiments, but nothing else.

Don't set boundaries like, "you get the vegetables or let's make a chicken dish" each person picks 5 random items they want and that way you never can tell what you will end up with. Make sure you take plenty of fun pictures as you build your creation. So, you end up with only enough ingredients to make two desserts? Oh well, that would work in my house.

My husband and I live about three hours away from our daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren and don't get to visit them as often as we'd like. When my husband and I were going on a 7-week vacation, I was worried we would lose touch with my grandchildren.

The exact opposite happened, when I came upon the idea of creating a vacation blog that I could send along the way to include them in on our adventures. I couldn't believe how well it worked. We called on Skype from Italy and my 11-year-old granddaughter was all excited to tell me she had been following our blog.

My granddaughter and grandson couldn't wait for us to get back from our trip. They were so excited to talk about the trip and knew all the places we had gone. When we were making cookies, one of our favorite activities, my granddaughter insisted we take a picture and label it 'We're Home!"

It was so perfect, I plan to keep it going and do a posting at least once a month. I found that it's easy to let life just slip by and we lose precious moments with our loved ones. By creating a blog, you include your family in your life in ways you can't do by just catching up.

Although it took me a several attempts to find the right place, it is now easier than I thought it would be. I even chose the name - The Old Folks Adventures, because it made my grandchildren laugh. As an added bonus, we sent it to all of our friends and got wonderful comments from them. It was great fun for my husband and to look and see how many people had read it.

The purpose of the blog is not to make money or teach, it is simply to help create family togetherness in this crazy, digital world.

Weight Loss = Sex Gain!

If you're looking for reasons to get back into shape, to lose weight and to improve your health, then consider the impact of your weight on your sex life!

Research from Duke University indicates that up to 30% of obese people seeking help controlling their weight indicate problems with sex drive, sexual desire, sexual performance, or all three.

We know that medical conditions such as high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes have the ability to impact sexual performance, which then may psychologically impact sexual desire. In men, both conditions can cause the tiny arteries in the penis to clog with fatty deposits, which can result in erectile dysfunction and/or impotence.

And overweight women are being affected as well! Similar blockages in the blood vessels leading to the clitoris are causing women's bodies to be less sexually responsive, which also may lead to a decrease in sexual desire.

Worse yet for the sex drive, the higher the body fat percentage, the higher the levels in the body of SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin). SHBG binds to the sex hormone testosterone, effectively reducing the testosterone available in the body. And testosterone is responsible for our sex drive, in both men AND women.

Of course, the impact of our weight upon our body image and our self-esteem is also a huge one when it comes to our sex life. If we don't feel attractive, we certainly tend to isolate and withdraw and not allow others into our personal/sexual space, even if THEY find us appealing.

The good news though, is that as we lose weight, our improving sex drive serves to help us keep the weight off, for a number of good reasons.

1. On average, you can burn up to 200 calories or more during a half hour lovemaking session!

2. If we have a healthy sex life, we are less frustrated and we generally eat less when we are not frustrated.

3. Sex is a mood enhancer. The more sex, the more endorphins (feel good hormone) are released and the better we feel. And again, we may not need to eat to "fill up" that anxiety or depression.

4. Sexual activity reduces the level of cortisol (the stress hormone) in our bodies. Cortisol raises our blood pressure, lowers our immune system and causes us to store fat in our bodies. And cortisol also contributes to the aging process, so sex can definitely keep us younger!

5. Sexual activity tends to improve our quality of sleep, which is also connected to weight loss.

6. The more activities that increase the blood flow to our large muscle groups (thighs, buttocks, pelvis), the better circulation we will have to the genitals. This will ultimately lead to improved arousal and orgasm and increasing sexual desire. There's a synergistic effect here, almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

And, as an extra added bonus for men, I was told the following by Dr. Neil Cannon, a well-respected Sex Therapist in Denver: for every 30 pounds a man loses, his penis effectively gains an inch of length!

So there you have it, the long and the short of it! Hopefully this has given you some extra incentive to get yourself in shape or to continue your commitment to staying in shape. My goal is to inspire you, even if just a little bit. Slow and steady does win the race.
